Planning

Historical Context

Authorized in 1911 and completed in 1922, the Lincoln Memorial was designed by architect Henry Bacon in a Greek Doric temple style. The 36 columns represent the states in the Union at the time of Lincoln's death. The memorial's primary purpose was to honor the 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, and heal the societal wounds of the Civil War. Over time, it evolved into a prominent site for the Civil Rights Movement, symbolizing the struggle for freedom and equality for all Americans, a legacy cemented by Marian Anderson's 1939 concert and the 1963 March on Washington.

Photography Tips

  • Sunrise offers soft, golden light and beautiful reflections in the pool with minimal crowds.
  • For evening shots, use a tripod and a slow shutter speed to capture the illuminated marble without blur.
  • A polarizing filter can help reduce glare from the marble and deepen the blue of the sky and water during the day.
  • Capture details like the carved inscriptions or the textures of the columns for more intimate shots.

Insider Tips

  • Stand on the inscribed granite landing on the 18th step below the statue, marking the exact spot where Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his 'I Have a Dream' speech.
  • Visit the small, often-overlooked museum on the lower level, which details the construction and history of the memorial.
  • For a unique photo, stand to the far left of the chamber to see the profile of Robert E. Lee's face rumored to be carved into the back of Lincoln's hair.
  • The best, unobstructed view of the Washington Monument and Capitol is from the very top step, directly in the center.

Absolutely essential D.C. experience

We booked a guided walking tour that included the Lincoln Memorial, and it was the best decision. Our guide, Sarah, was a walking encyclopedia of knowledge. Standing on the steps where MLK Jr. spoke gave me chills. Seeing it lit up at night is a memory I'll never forget. Booking was simple and the email had all the info we needed.

Powerful and Moving

The sheer scale of the statue is breathtaking. Our evening tour was perfect - the crowds were smaller and the atmosphere was so peaceful and respectful. The guide explained the symbolism in the architecture and the meaning behind the inscriptions, which made the visit so much richer. Highly recommend a guided tour to truly appreciate this place.

Beautiful and Historic

A very impressive monument. We visited in the middle of the day and it was very busy, which is the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5. The view down the Reflecting Pool to the Washington Monument is iconic for a reason. The tour provided a lot of historical context which was very helpful for an international visitor. I suggest going very early or late if you can.

Don't Miss This!

Booked a bus tour through this site that stopped here for about 45 minutes. It was the highlight of the tour. The memorial is even more grand in person. Having the transportation sorted and a guide to lead the way made everything so easy. We learned about the 'secret' face in Lincoln's hair and the story behind the 36 columns. Fantastic experience.

Unforgettable View

I visited during the spring and the weather was perfect. Walking along the Reflecting Pool towards the memorial was a wonderful experience. The statue itself is a masterpiece of sculpture. I chose a small-group walking tour, and it felt very personal. The guide was passionate and answered all our questions. A must-do in Washington.

Magnifique et émouvant

An incredibly powerful place. I booked a tour in French which was a huge bonus. The guide explained not just Lincoln's history, but the memorial's role in modern history as well. Seeing the Gettysburg Address carved in the wall is something I will always remember. The booking process was very smooth.

A Must-See Landmark

A trip to DC isn't complete without seeing the Lincoln Memorial. We did a self-guided visit but used the tips from this site to go early in the morning, which was great advice. It was peaceful and we got amazing photos. I can see why a tour would be beneficial to understand all the details, but it's still incredible on its own. It's a lot of walking around the mall, so wear good shoes!

Incrível!

What a powerful symbol of freedom. I visited at night, and it was simply breathtaking. The way it's lit up is very dramatic and beautiful. I joined a night bus tour I found here, and it was the best way to see all the monuments illuminated without having to walk for miles in the dark. Highly recommended!
